How to Eat Flax Seeds and Soy Milk When You Don't Really Like Them

Here's the thing: Most people eat because things taste good. But what about this: What about eating because it's good for your health? Take flax seeds for example. They're not really that good! But boy, are they good for you!

Here's a way to eat crushed flax seeds: Buy a container of already crushed flax seeds and store them in the freezer. When you pour your cereal in the morning, put a tablespoon of the flax seed on one tiny corner of the bowl. Now when you eat your cereal, eat the flax seeds with a bit of cereal first. Then you can eat the rest of your cereal, without the seed. After doing this for a while, you will begin to like flax seeds better.

For soy milk, I prefer the unsweetened. Start by only moistening your cereal in the morning. Don't pour a lot on at first. Later, as you get accustomed to the taste, pour more soymilk on. When I first started doing this I didn't like the flavor compared to milk. Now I can drink the remaining soy milk left in the bowl. My next challenge, down the road, will be to drink a whole carton of soy milk. I know a colleague who took little boxes with her in hotels when at library conferences. I've got to get to that point, because it is on-the-go protein.

We are all on a road -- best wishes to you who are on that vegan road. Until next time, Bonnie

I just make salad dressings with flax oil... and I have soymilk in porridge, or lately I have been buying the small quarts of strawberry and chocolate as a treat.

Good ideas, Karene. I heard that flax oil has a very short shelf life, but you probably use it up quickly.

I put flax oil in smoothies. The other strong tastes overwhelm the flax.

When I was first experimenting with soy milk I found that the vanilla flavor was much more palatable in my cereal! While I can't drink a glass of plain soy milk I will happily down a glass of chocolate soy milk (also you can blow bubbles in it with a straw like when you were a kid).

Nice to hear from you, Maria Rose. I'll have to try that chocolate soy milk sometime!

Oh goodness! If you don't like soy milk, DON'T DRINK IT! It's vile! It always repeats on me and makes me queasy - there are plenty of options. I adore almond milk - it's easy to make yourself , but I'm usually so lazy that I just buy Pacific foods brand.

Another use for ground flax (I grind mine in the coffee/spice grinder) is to sprinkle them on your salad... yum!

I've learned to enjoy ground flax seed mixed in my hot oatmeal. I used to mix it with salsa and scoop up with baked chips.

If you like carob powder, you can put a spoonful of carob into a cup of soymilk and add a little maple syrup - yum!

It's good to hear from you, TLC! Great ideas! To tell you the truth, the more I eat flax seeds (with my cereal in the morning) the more I like them. However, I think you idea of putting them into salsa is a great one! Thanks for sharing!

I think you would benefit from listening to this podcast: "Vegetarian Food For Thought". It gives sooo many awesome suggestions for things like flax seeds (i.e. put them in morning smoothies, oatmeal, etc) and how to transition to things like Soy Milk. I promise that once you listen to 3 episodes, you'll be addicted

Brandi, good idea! I will listen to that podcast you mentioned.

By the way, since I wrote this blog post, I have developed a taste for flax seeds!

Flaxseed is a great fiber for the body, you can use it with many varieties of food and drink.
a tea spoon of flax seed with a glass of milk or soy milk

a tea spoon of flax seed on salad.
a tea spoon of flax seed in gravy after you complete cooking and the pot is near to cool that way you don't kill the fiber in it.

the scope is big.

one suggestion! drink lots of water when having a mix of flax seed with anything, water helps the fiber movement in digestion.
